CONSIDER THIS: Living and graduating without regret

Michael Rodriguez

When I was 18, my top priority was getting a part-time job so I could save up enough money to purchase the entire Led Zeppelin, Beatles and U2 discographies.

This was life.

Nothing interrupted me from obtaining this goal. And so after graduating from San Benito High School (Class of 99 for those wondering), I did what any teenager obsessed with music would do – I got a job at a pizza shop.

Working from 5 to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday, I found myself in love with this gig. I got to sleep in, work with other teens who shared my interests, eat all the pizza I wanted during my breaks (but didn’t gain a single pound… I miss those days), and, more importantly, I was on the fast track to accomplishing my goal.

Houses of the Holy – check.

Abbey Road – check.

Achtung Baby – check.

One by one, I was marking these classic albums off my list (yes, I had a list… shut up).

Then came December 1999, by which point I had earned enough money to buy a computer – my first – and a lot of silly little knick-knacks for my Mercury Sable. I was proud of that car. But none of that made a difference compared to my last purchase before I moved on from this glorious pizza gig: The White Album.

You see, it was the last album I needed to complete my collection of discographies from The Big 3, which is how I used to refer to my obsession.

“Hell yes!” I said to myself at the cash register with my money in hand, proud that I had finally reached this climactic point in my life.

“Life is good,” I thought.

Of course, I would later get my act together. But it took the death of my grandmother, someone who always believed in me, to motivate me to better myself. And so I did.

To this day, the only other job I’ve held besides working at Lucas Pizza at Valle Vista Mall in Harlingen is the San Benito News. And once I got my foot in the door, I never stepped out.

Still, I often wonder how much sooner I could have gotten here if I hadn’t wasted so much time goofing off, and for what? Music I could have downloaded for free… er… that is in a totally legal way.

Yeah.

Anyway, while listening to Rocky Raccoon and reviewing this year’s applicants for the San Benito News Scholarship, I was reminded of that day when I bought The White Album. But it wasn’t a fond recollection.

Student after student, I read how each of them were at the top of their class, boasted 4.0 GPAs; were accepted to Ivy League schools, and participated in more extra-curricular activities, acts of volunteerism and community service than I could count on two hands. After being overwhelmed with more scholarship applicants than we’ve ever had, I couldn’t help but ask myself, “What was I doing again when I was their age?”

Shame immediately kicked in, and so I walked over to my CDs (yes, I still have them) and stared for a minute. It’s funny how things that were once so important to you now seem so insignificant. Again, it took the exposure of people who are better than I am in every facet of humanity to come to this realization.

With that said, I’d like to take the time to praise the students from Rio Hondo High School, South Texas Academy for Medical Professionals, and San Benito High School who applied for our scholarship, especially this year’s recipient, San Juana Garcia – a young woman who has inspired me to continue bettering myself.

I have the utmost confidence that these students will move on in their lives without wasting time, and without regret.

San Benito police reported Friday that a mobile number used to text a bomb threat at Rio Hondo High School has been linked to the highly-controversial teenage phone harassment case.

Assistant Operations Chief Michael Galvan of the San Benito Police Department said that the bomb threat, sent via text message on Wednesday, indicated that a bomb would be at the Rio Hondo High School gym on Thursday, June 13. Although Rio Hondo ISD officials have remained tight-lipped on the matter, summer school students attending RHHS reported Thursday that no explosive devices were found.

Galvan, meanwhile, said that the mobile number used to send the bomb threat was identified in the aforementioned phone harassment case, which lead to the June 6 arrest of Alexandria E. Gonzales, the 17-year-old Rio Hondo High School student accused of threatening to kill a fellow classmate and eat the victim’s organs. The family of the victim alleges that such threats came in the form of nearly 2,000 text messages sent in a three-week span.

According to Galvan, the number in question has also been linked to a 2012 RHHS bomb threat.

This year’s class of 2014 has no shortage of phenomenal students who excel both in and out of the classroom, though two particular students are academic standouts.

RHHS seniors Kristen Rebekkah Garcia and Vanessa Maree Hernandez were especially anticipatory being that they were named this year’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

Rio Hondo High School Summer Band

Rio Hondo High School Summer Band

RIO HONDO – Clarinets are whistling, drums are beating and flags are being tossed. It can only mean one thing: band season is here.

For Rio Hondo High School, this means the beginning of a new era. Former RHHS band director John Garza announced his departure on July 9, leaving Rio Hondo in search of a new leader.

Benjamin Keltner, formerly assistant band director, has been named interim band director while the search continues. Keltner has been a part of the RHHS band for three years and knows the system. He is applying for the full-time band director job and believes it’s “very likely” he’ll be selected.

The RHHS band, although without a permanent leader, is hopeful. Band member Iris Gamez on the change of leadership said, “It’s for the best. Change will only make us stronger and help us improve.”

Gamez is a leader on the RHHS band and when asked if she is excited for this season, she said, “I’m excited because it’s a state year and excited to finally get on the field.”

Saxophone section leader Brian Juarez is looking forward to the band season, saying, “I’m really excited. Everything is so different, so I believe as a band we can take it to a whole new level.”

Keltner said, “It’s outstanding. In my opinion, our students, our staff and our support are second to none… the best in the Valley.”

Keltner, regarding goals and expectations, added, “We have the same ones (goals) every year: to be a positive place for students; be driven to win; advance as high as possible. It’s everyone’s dream to win a state championship, that’s the ultimate goal.

“Above all else,” he added, “it’s the attitude that excites me. The students have such positive attitudes. It’s amazing.”

Rio Hondo enters a state tournament qualifying year boasting an impressive track record over the past decade, placing 16th in 2002, 8th in ’04, 4th in ’06, 2nd in ’08, 6th in ’10 and 13th in ’12.

RIO HONDO – The award-winning and ever-entertaining Rio Hondo High School Marching Band held its Sumer Showcase and Squad Competition for parents and spectators on Thursday, Aug. 21.

First-year head band director Benjamin Keltner introduced spectators to the goings-on of a typical band practice and had a special performance for parents. The band members were instructed to form a large circle, whereas parents were invited to the inner circle to experience a “surround sound” experience.

Following the mini-practice and special showcase, the RHHS band proceeded into squad competitions. The band split into nine different sections in which each section came up with their own theme and special performance. Themes ranged from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to Toy Story. However, the Star Wars-themed saxophone squad proved victorious in the end.

“I think it’s a fun way to show creativity and a great team building activity,” said Keltner.

The band will perform their show “Redemption” for the first time at halftime on Friday, Aug. 29, as the Rio Hondo Bobcats take on Santa Rosa at Bobcat Stadium.

The band’s first competition comes Oct. 4 as Rio Hondo will host its annual Deep River Marching Festival. The festival is to include both large and small bands from throughout the Valley. Following the festival, the band will compete every weekend in October.

RIO HONDO – Need proof of just how good of a defense the Rio Hondo Bobcats have this season?

Look at the numbers: 172 yards allowed per game (tops in the Valley), 30 forced turnovers (including 22 fumbles) and nearly 80 sacks as a unit in 10 regular season games.

If that’s not enough, you can always ask around.

“When you play Rio Hondo, it’s gonna be tough and they’re gonna hit you,” one 16-4A Division-II coach said.

“They have the toughest defense we faced this season,” said another.

The Bobcat defense, long a staple of stability under head coach Rocky James, has indeed been spectacular throughout the season. Rio Hondo (8-2 overall) faces its biggest challenge yet when it takes on the Cuero Gobblers (8-2) in their Class 4A Division-II bi-district playoff game in Corpus Christi on Friday night.

“It’s really hard to say,” James said when asked to pinpoint the reason for the success of the defense. “They just really care about playing defense and go hard every single play, especially in practice. They take a lot of pride in what we do, which is stopping people. They WANT to be the best.

It’s not just these guys. We have a lot of guys who come in and get reps all over our defense.”

The unit, comprised of arguably the best front seven in the Valley, may not have the household names of Bobcats past, but they’re just as salty.

Up front, defensive linemen Isaiah Heredia, Mike Lozano, Mando Luna and Albert Magallanes provide the first line of defense—literally.

Magallanes has been a menace to opposing offenses all season. The junior notched 75 total tackles, a team-best 20 sacks and 13 QB pressures, and recovered three fumbles this season.

And he certainly wasn’t alone. Heredia (72 total tackles, 12 sacks, 8 QB pressures, 3 forced fumbles, 1 recovery, 1 interception) is also a force up front along with Lozano (72 total tackles, nine sacks along with team-high four fumble recoveries) and Luna (52 total tackles, 12 sacks, recovered fumble for TD).

“Our front seven has pretty much dominated for us,” James said. “And it starts with our D-line. They set the tone up front and give our linebackers chances to go and make plays. Against a good team like Orange Grove, we were able to get good pressure without blitzing, just sending those four guys.”

True to form, a talented trio of linebackers, led by Roel Benitez, Daniel Flores and Ethan James reap the benefits of all of that success before them.

Flores has been the leader of the group since last season, when many on the Bobcat stoppers were taking their lumps as sophomores. Flores is as good as there is in the business, as shown by his 92 total tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles.

“Daniel’s been the leader and the main guy in the middle,” Rocky James said.

As Flores mans the middle, Benitez has racked up some serious stats as well. On the year, the senior has 94 total tackles, three sacks and has become a tackling machine. James’ son Ethan dons his dad’s old number 32 and has turned in a great sophomore campaign with 53 total tackles, a couple of sacks and two forced fumbles to go with two recoveries.

Against the Gobblers, who are back in the playoffs making noise after a couple of down years, Rio Hondo knows it’ll get a steady dose of the run game, which could play into the Bobcats’ defensive strengths.

“They’re not gonna do anything fancy,” Rocky James said. “They’re gonna run the football and try to run it at us. If our defense can hold its ground and gang-tackle, we’ll be in good shape.”
